Solar Panels

We have a 5KW photovoltaic unit installed on the roof of our retail outlet premises, which provides us with electricity. The use of renewable energy sources (RES), such as solar energy from photovoltaic systems is an integral element of the principles of sustainability. The energy we produce at the farm is use directly for our electricity needs and indirectly through our hybrid heating system.

Composting

We have constructed a 3m2 composter, which composts all organic waste derived from the various functions performed on the farm, at the winery and in the houses. The grape marc is excluded from the process, as - after having been dried - it is used to feed the farm animals. As organic waste, we also consider the leaves and branch trimmings, the dregs and the sediments from the wine-making process, as well as the food and paper waste from the houses. In this way, we transform all the above-mentioned organic waste into compost, or else soil conditioner, which we then use as a natural fertiliser for our gardens and vineyards.

Double energy hybrid heating system

We have constructed a hybrid water heating system for our daily needs in hot water (a combination of solar energy and biomass burning), which covers us throughout the year. In other words, we use our fireplaces, as well as solar panels, to heat water both for daily use and for the heating of radiators and floor panels in all the farm buildings including the guesthouses. With the application of this bioclimatic system we have eliminated the use of air-conditioners in our buildings.

Aerobic system of wastewater biological treatment

The liquid waste from the winery and the houses is piped into special tanks, where it is treated with oxygen for biological cleaning (A.S.M. Activated Sludge Model). This treatment results in two by-products: sewage sludge, which is shifted into the composter, and some almost-clean water suitable for irrigation. This reduces the amount of water that we would need to pump from the municipal water network. An additional factor, of course, is the use of biodegradable detergents and cleaning materials.

Therefore, the certified eco-friendly agricultural and viticultural concern, built solely with natural materials and combined with the environment-friendly recycling and energy-producing systems presents a habitat which is 100% free from chemicals and consistent with the principles of eco-balance and sustainability.

  • We have built a rainwater storage system for irrigation purposes.

  • Avoid the use of fossil fuels and opt for using alternative technology methods and systems.

  • Recycle packaging and other materials.

  • Built the houses using exclusively natural materials, such as wood, stone, reed, fabric, traditional cast iron things, etc

  • Ensure that all the furniture we use, the doors and the windows are made from natural wood and are covered with natural protective materials, such as wax and oil.

  • Use cork underlay in our beds and eco-friendly mattresses made from 100% latex.

  • Take care that all towels, bed sheets and bedcovers are 100% cotton.

  • Use soaps made only from natural materials and biodegradable detergents.
